Cherished and much loved Elise S1, less of an advert and more of a sadvert for what my kids call the fourth child. Car has wanted for nothing and I’d like to sell my collection of spares and extra items with the car as a package. I have owned the car since 2006 and have spent 18 years dealing with every single failing and flaw inherent in an early S1, the car is absolutely on the button
Unless otherwise noted all work has been carried out by Back on Track of Guildford I simply cannot praise them highly enough as experts on these cars, they’ve been a pleasure to deal with.
When I bought the car it already had the red Momo lift off wheel that was used on all the motorsport Elises and had been converted to steel EBC discs and “S2” suspension on Bilsten shocks.
Since that time I have been through the car from front to back as follows:
Number plate – I have two. One is a fully compliant std plate. The other, for display only, is scaled to my spec, so not silly small, legal spacing and font and fits neatly on the original plinth
Grill – refurbished in satin black
Running lights – one cracked, replaced, both now have Eliseparts protective covers
Towing upright – replaced with new part from Eliseparts, they get rusty and useless
Lightcovers – Eliseparts items fitted by me, apparently more neatly than factory
Headlamps – both replaced with new OEM items, upgraded bulbs
Headlamp retaining rings – the originals simply rust away replaced with stainless Eliseparts items
Indicators – smoked items with orange bulbs – original orange ones with the car as spares
Side repeaters – smoked – original orange ones with the car as spares
Radiator and fan – original replaced with quality rad and new fan – zero issues
Heater matrix – replaced with Eliseshop upgraded item, nice and warm and better demisting
Security wheel nut – replaced with new item from Eliseparts (old one with car as spare)
Wheel nuts – very specific to S1 on std issue 5 spoke wheels – correct nuts from Eliseparts
Tyre weld – new bottle to replace probably useless original
New Battery – 2023 – with added connector for Accumate trickle charger. Battery has correct pipe to vent to wheel area to avoid any gas build up.
New washer bottle and pump – I have the old bottle – replaced both, just cosmetic really…
Windscreen wiper – Eliseparts upgrade kit item
Clutch hose – dreaded “red” hose replaced with braded hose – zero issues since
Throttle linkage – fitted with upgraded Eliseparts kit, no issues since
Clutch trunnion – Kit from Eliseparts fitted – no squeaky clutch
Gear linkage – new linkage kit –, gearbox oil refreshed around 1 to 2k miles ago – big difference
Floors – Early rubber mat car – All corrosion to the floors neutralised, treated with POR15 – I have brand new floor panels, will come with the car
Sill pads – refurbished by Lotus trim shop, upgrade to Keprotech
Hood – refurbished by Lotus trimshop, as above. All new wires, replacement leading edge plastics. The hood itself has been treated regularly with Autoglym cleaner and water repellent.
Radio – Radio CD player – with manual and code etc. Never listen to the radio or music in this car…
Window winders – Ally replacement items – original lovely Mini Metro plastic items with car
Side window seals – the originals rust and bulge over time – they have been replaced
Seats – Redoneby Allon White, Lotus Probax foam and with Keprotec trim match the sill pads.
Rear Window – original glass item – replaced all the foam seals – no, it doesn’t rattle
Fuel filler ring – Original ring round the neck replaced with Eliseparts stainless steel
Rear grills – New Eliseparts + two extra coats of satin black hammerite to enhance durability
Fog and reversing lights – (behind grills) – brand new for the last MOT (September) with new bulbs
Engine – Induction – Eliseshop “Hurricane” kit in polished alloy, 52mm throttle body, exhaust Piper 4-2-1 item, Jim (Tubular) with olive joint to allow ease of fitting other rear sections, rear section is from a sport 160, the car has a catalyst, so no MOT emissions issues. Head has been off to replace the std gasket with the later K-Series steel pin type. New Alternator and Coil. Extra heat shielding to exhaust area and alternator area for protection. Blue Maganor leads, new cap and rotor arm also. Original plastic dipstick replaced.
Gearbox – oil replaced in the last year or so and the shift is noticeably sweeter
Suspension – Fully replaced. ALL new components arms, roll bar, bushes, every last nut and bolt. Nitron one way adjustable, Uprated Eliseparts toe links, car has been “setup” by Back on Track
Tyres – Avon ZZR tyres plenty of tread left
Brakes – converted to EBC grooved and belled discs, Mintex 1144 pads, braided hoses.
Storage and maintenance
Always been stored in a dry clean well-sealed garage, tyres NOT on cold surface and with sonic protection. Never ever stored wet used Chemical Guys Jetseal 109, polished with Swisswax Onyx. No microblisters. Front is not perfect, there are chips, but nothing major. Car has been used J Not driven on salted roads or in the rain for years. Wheels a slightly darker silver chrome finish, looks fantastic with the Titanium body.
Car run on E5 ever since the introduction of higher ethanol fuel. This is to avoid the rot and degradation these fuel can cause, not for the performance, which I don’t think applies for the Elise in any case as without an aftermarket Emerald there is no gain from the higher octane rating in any event. Fuel has been Shell V-Power or Tesco Momentum (Esso) Occasional use car – 1000 to 800 miles a year.
Spares and Parts that will be supplied as part of the sale of the car:
Hardtop – Eliseparts item, painted to match, Shower Cap – Elemental cap, with it’s original “bag” cover, Hood bag for soft top. Cylinder head – with induction manifold, TB and some hotter cams. Pipe of Doom – alloy radiator Pipe that connects the radiator to the engine runs down the sill. Floor Panels, as mentioned above.Pedal Pads – For the Brake and Clutch, new and never fitted. Spare Fuel relay and alarm defeat loop – bought to fault find – it was a dead coil – thanks to a club member for the relay. Original airbox and Pipe – replaced when I fitted the Hurricane, spare cone filter for Hurricane. Spare roof bar –Handy to use with the Shower Cap. Original Orange indicators and repeaters. 2 x Spare seats with frames, 2 x sill pads. Spare front and rear Grills. Original Plastic door winders. Accumate trickle charger – these are quality units and the car has the “plug” on the battery. Spare Throttle bodies – Original plasticone + Metal 47mm, then a 52mm which is on the car. Spare bulbs, de cat pipe, body clips and assorted rivnuts all will be with the car boxed, bagged and labelled. Indoor Eliseparts car cover + bag to store it
I have both keys and the cobra alarm reset key. Full service history, from first service in 1998, all the MOTs, all bills, Certificate from Lotus, press appearances, notes on all spares. Car stored in dry, dehumidified, sealed garage. I have tried to address all the failings and weaknesses of the Elise S1.
Reasons for sale – I have another car journey to go on, I’ll miss it very, very much, I’ll simply never own a better drivers car than this but, sadly, it’s time
